This Economy is Simply Wacky 
New York Times writer Jeanna Smialek writes: “Years into the pandemic, it is still difficult to get a handle on what comes next for the economy by looking at examples from the past. Historical data has always been critical to those who make economic predictions. But three years into the pandemic, America is suffering through an economic whiplash of sorts—and the past is proving anything but a reliable guide.”
&#38;nbsp;

We’re Already Living in the Metaverse Our constant need for entertainment has blurred the line between fiction and reality—on television, in American politics, and in our everyday lives: Megan Garber's cover story of the March 2023 issue of The Atlantic. As the article outlnes: "By the mid-20th century, the historian Warren Susman argued, a great shift was taking place. American values had traditionally emphasized a collection of qualities we might shorthand as “character”: honesty, diligence, an abiding sense of duty. The rise of mass media changed those terms, Susman wrote. In the media-savvy and consumption-oriented society that Americans were building, people came to value—and therefore demand—what Susman called “personality”: charm, likability, the talent to entertain. “The social role demanded of all in the new Culture of Personality was that of a performer,” Susman wrote. “Every American was to become a performing self.”


While working on the art for this story I wished to step away from the chaos that one might associate with the metaverse, and focus instead on a kind of desert of the self. A big, gleaming nothing, in the midst of a vast darkness. Screen, body, and space gradually coalesce. Who Is The Sky? by David Byrne 
Released with Matador Records in September 2025, Who Is the Sky?&#38;nbsp;is the ninth studio album by musician David Byrne. I designed the record art and tour graphics in collaboration with Byrne. 
The cover of the record depicts Byrne dressed in otherworldly outfits: he nearly disappears into radiating, kaleidoscopic patterns that are formed by echoing images of himself. We worked to create a contrasting effect where he is both disappearing, yet also hyper-visible. I am reminded of Oscar Wilde’s words, “give a man a mask, and he will show you his true face.” In that sense, the cover art invites the audience to step into another reality and become the mythical creature we all harbor inside—to transcend and escape from the confines of ourselves.

&#38;nbsp;

The suits that Byrne is wearing, as well as the typography of the record, repurpose ready-made materials to form something whimsical and dreamlike, central themes in the record’s title and songs. The outfits were designed by Belgian artist Tom Van der Borght and photographed by Ahmed Klink. While they may seem phantasmagoric at first, in reality they are made of everyday materials one might find at a hardware store: ropes, fasteners, buttons, clasps, zippers. The typography of the record is also made entirely of images of Byrne, which are then cloned along a path to reveal each letterform.Who Is The Sky has won a Gold Clio for Album Packaging and a Silver Clio for Mixed Campaign. 
The record was also recognized as Prize Nominee Work by Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2026, and was selected to be featured in the Annual Book, and exhibited at the TDC Exhibition.

You Are the Object of a Secret Extraction Operation
In her guest essay in The New York Times Sunday Review, psychologist and philosopher Shoshana Zuboff outlines how surveillance capitalism is the dominant economic institution of our time, with countervailing law being nearly non-existent. Amidst the calls to regulate surveillance empires like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, Zuboff asks some hard questions: “will the call to ‘regulate Facebook’ dissuade lawmakers from a deeper reckoning? Or will it prompt a heightened sense of urgency? Will we finally reject the old answers and free ourselves to ask the new questions, beginning with this: What must be done to ensure that democracy survives surveillance capitalism?”


With the narrative of extraction in mind, while working on this animated illustration I tried to focus on the idea of our lives, identities, and thoughts as individuals being pulled from us, and processed into bits of data that’s distributed and traded in the vast void of surveillance capitalist empires. With every pulse, and every breath, we emit more fragments of our souls and bodies, and get “sucked” into the surrounding void, endlessly. As the emission goes on, these fragments change color and create their own depth of field, in a way that visualizes the complex and urgent character of this unregulated dispersion of personal information and the threats it poses.&#38;nbsp;Writer: Shoshana Zuboff

MTV ID: The Third Eye&#38;nbsp;
	To mark and celebrate MTV’s 40th birthday, I was invited to create an MTV ID that identifies and ignites the audiences that will fuel the channel's next 40 years. In response, I illustrated and animated an MTV ID that takes the viewer through the third eye, symbolizing a sense of higher consciousness, self-direction, intuition, and empowerment: both of the audience and of MTV as a cultural force.&#38;nbsp;From escapism to activism, this flythrough imagines a landscape in which elements from the sky and stars, the earth, the sea and wildlife exist side by side, over and under, near, far, above, and beyond.

LA Phil, GlassSkatesA Philip Glass-inspired roller-skating party at Moonlight Rollerway in Los Angeles. A West Coast tribute to Philip Glass’ birthday, which was traditionally thrown at an ice-skating rink in NYC, the party (and the poster) are inspired by Glass’ work from the early 1980s along with the 1980s neon vibes of the roller rink.
The poster draws a view of a rippling surface centered around an abstracted skating rink. The title appears in the form of connective lines and trails signaling movement and tracing transition.&#38;nbsp;Through this composition, and its full spectrum of colors, we hoped to reference the rhythmic processes, development through repetition, and the inherently non-minimalist minimalism that’s characteristic of Glass’s musical work.

To enhance the sense of intensityand viberation, in the printing process we replaced the magenta channel with a bright neon pink. The type around the main title is Sélavy, designed by Nina Stössinger for Paul Soulellis and his project Library of the Printed Web. As described by its designers, this is a dotted typeface loosely based on the 13 punched-out caps on Marcel Duchamp’s 1934 Green Box.Producer: Julia Ward

A24 Zine: Frenemies Guest edited by filmmaker Halina Reijn for the release of her film Bodies Bodies Bodies, this zine celebrates the friendships we love, as well as those we love to hate. It features some pretty toxic group chats, games you should definitely not play, pretty feisty TikToks, photography from Mayan Toledano, Larry Sultan, Sandy Kim, Cameron McCool, and some quotes by Nietzsche, for extra drama. As the director’s letter beautifully states: “Groups are scary and seductive at the same time. Cults, communes, conspiracy theorists, friend groups, families, theater troupes, political parties, sports teams, Game of Thrones fans, religious movements, herds, flocks, tribes, or just a collection of humans in a confined space.”Many of us tend to think of ourselves as aliens and imposters, trying to fit in and belong (or trying to run away). This zine looks at friend groups in all their spite and tenderness, in the spaces where these dynamics play out most intensely: at parties, online, sitting in a friend’s bedroom late on a Friday night. In an instant, you are in and then out, laughing and then crying, predator and then prey.&#38;nbsp;Shop ︎

	2019 Film Independent 
Spirit Awards
	For the fifth year running, team Emily Oberman at Pentagram designed the show packaging for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the annual ceremony that recognizes the best in independent film. The nominees and winners in 2019 were more diverse than ever, with women dominating the Best Director category, Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel “If Beale Street Could Talk” taking Best Feature and Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You” honored with Best First Feature. The current political climate has energized the film industry to be more inclusive and equitable, and this exciting sense of change could be felt at the ceremony. This bold spirit found its way into the design of the graphics, which hint at the heroic with dimensional type zooming through space.&#38;nbsp;


	We created more than 20 bumpers for the ceremony, including introductions and nominee packages. In each animation, dimensional letterforms made of light project through the dark like images in a theater, moving in different ways as the typography is extruded, outlined, and plays with perspective. We experimented with light: having it flicker, swing, dim and blast. In a nod to 3D, the palette is red and blue, the colors that are used to create the stereoscopic 3D effect in film. We worked to make the light letterforms look strong but weightless, playing with the texture to make them luminous and reflective. Light is scattered and refracted within the surface of the letterforms to give them a viscous quality that feels like its own substance and material.

	The set design extended the 3D look with a series of screens filled with ambient animations during the ceremony.
The screens created virtual spaces that played with depth and perspective, transforming throughout the show by appearing to 
dimensionally expand and recede into space.

Inspired by the whimsical and surreal nature of the film, the zine offers a glimpse into some of the weirdest facts, laws, and strange ways that dictate the way our money reaches (or avoids reaching) the US government.&#38;nbsp;Packaged in a bureau-fetish presentation, this zine includes: interviews with former IRS agents, a wild guide to tax avoidance, stories of astronauts who have requested filing extensions from space, a guide to surviving a tax audit &#38;amp; much more. A24 Zine: American Hu$tlers American Hu$tlers was edited by filmmaker Sean Baker for the launch of his film Red Rocket. As Baker wrote in the intro: “there is a long tradition of "hustlers" in American cinema—Midnight Cowboy, Panic in Needle Park, Mean Streets. These hustlers are really just a reflection of the rest of us. It’s human nature to always be leveling up, or at least trying to level up. And there’s a certain American ingenuity to the ways people think they can do it.”


Composed of only ads, the zine is a homage to all of those American hustlers—from the sex workers to the 1-800 psychics to the savant counterfeiters to the multi-level marketing believers. Some of the ads are real, and others are fake (but based on real hustlers). See if you can spot the cons, or just let the naked ambition wash over you.&#38;nbsp;Shop ︎
